Artist from Poland - TOMASZ DOMANSKI

As the first recipient of the UNESCO-ASCHBERG Bursaries for Artists program under the joint collaboration with the Philippe Charriol Foundation, Polish artist, Tomasz Domanski enjoyed a three-month residency in Hong Kong during 1999.

Embracing the fusion of "East Meets West" as early as 1995, Domanski decided to pursue his studies in the East, at Varanasi, India after having obtained a Masters Degree in the West, Wroclaw, Poland.

With his unique sensibilities and creative talents, Domanski firmly believes the extraordinary combustion between the natural environment and the urban surroundings. By combining raw elements such as wax, fibers, and straw then processing them through fire and ice, he is able to illustrate the natural processes of growth and disintegration. In demonstration of his artistic philosophy of the ephemeral nature of art and life, Domanski discussed in depth about his series of installations titled "Monuments of Time" in his seminar.

As the first artist in this program, this native of Poland also created much excitement with his solo exhibition titled "Western Medium/Eastern Matter". Illustrating the poignant phenomenon of tea drinking in the East, Domanski created an installation art piece with used teabags. In a carefully arranged, six-paneled mosaic, he created a type of ceremony which tied together his friends and himself as they all assisted him in the collection of his production "materials". By utilizing the used and dried tea bags, Domanski once again draws reference to the destruction and manipulation of nature via the process of capturing tealeaves from evergreen shrubs for the pleasure of human consumption.

With careful synergy, this Polish artist was able to intrinsically combine his artistic philosophy and also that of the Philippe Charriol Foundation in this egregious cultural and artistic exchange.
