ART CLASS IN THE CHESHIRE HOME OF SHATIN
Established in 1992, the art class was sponsored by the Philippe Charriol Foundation since 1996. With regular art classes, visits to the workshops of well-known local artists, and painting exhibitions, the Foundation offers its residents a wealth of creative activities. Hoping to enrich people's lives with art, the Foundation is constantly searching for new arenas for more aesthetic outlet. The physically impaired residents of the Cheshire Home of Shatin have been fully integrated into the mission of the Foundation as they do not let their physical disadvantage deter their creativity or determination.
Since the inception of this highly successful program, the residents have enjoyed using a variety of mediums such as collages, watercolor and acrylic paintings to express themselves.
Miss Candace Chu, one of the previous winners in Philippe Charriol Foundation Art Competitions and also our voluntary instructor, taught regular bi-weekly classes at the Cheshire Home of Shatin. Under her tutorage, students are able to express themselves freely and creatively. Having been with us for three and a half year, she left to pursue new career goals last month. In her position, we now have Ms. Ada Ng Suk-ching, who is also a finalist of past Philippe Charriol Foundation Art Competitions. |

In order to enhance the appeal of this already well-received activity, two additional instructors have been invited to bring in more new and exciting elements to the art class.
Both instructors focused on collage as a medium for the residents at the Cheshire Home of Shatin. With a slightly different usage of materials, Miss Eileen Yeung and Ms. Sindy Lau, both finalist and winner of Philippe Charriol Foundation Art Competitions respectively, gave these students a chance to visualize their innermost thoughts.
On 11 August 2001, visiting instructor, Miss Eileen Yeung assisted the residents in making imageries with cutouts. By selecting, cutting and pasting images from magazines, the residents were able to create beautiful works of art which were emphatic of their feelings. These works were able to draw a synergy with their world and the one outside. Despite their disabilities, the residents were delighted to try something new. In the end, they were able to create their own art works portraying different themes such as mountain scenery and human portraiture.
Another visiting instructor, Miss Sindy Lau, came in January 2002 to teach the residents the art of collage with photocopied materials onto clear or colored transparencies. By creating a synthesis of complimentary colors and fusion of images, the residents were once again able to amplify their feelings.
In October 2000, the "Paint An Equal World" exhibition witnessed the extraordinary strength and determination of these less fortunate students. With almost 100 pieces of their artwork on display, recognition of their creativity was given to these residents of the Cheshire Home of Shatin. Having worked diligently, these events provide an excellent opportunity for them to express themselves and their abilities. |
